Default Airlines - Picks and Pans

I'm going to be flying quite a bit this year, and I was wondering about everyone's opinions regarding Airline service. I'm not tied to a frequent flier program (yet), so that really isn't a key factor in picking an airline. I'm really more interested in opinions based on customer service, schedules, etc.

OK, let 'er rip

Based upon recent news reports, United, American and Delta seem to be really struggling but the government has bailed them out of immediate danger. I'm sure all airlines are struggling to some degree.

Forget the rewards programs. It won't matter how many frequent flyer miles you have if the airline goes belly up! It'll matter even less if the airplane goes belly up!!! I'd do some research on their financials and safety records.

Ironwedge:
I fly United a lot; stay far, far away from them! They are looking at a major work stoppage (Mechanics) in February, and morale there appears to be lower than low.

What airline you choose depends on what kind of trip you're taking. For a lot of the shorthaul stuff (LA to San Jose), I usually take Southwest. They're pretty cheap and they have a great frequent flier program. For other trips, I usually take American, since I have a lot of miles on their frequent flier program.

American airlines is pretty good. So is Jetblue airlines. They are one of the smaller airlines, but they are really one of the best out there.

I always fly United... always free drinks on the flight to Amsterdam, and at $306 with tax round trip from DC.. cant beat it!

I prefer Continental for coast-to-coast travel. I would use Virgin for transatlantic flights, Alaskan for west coast, southwest for anywhere else. Why would anyone fly American Airlines?! Especially after recent events.

Flew over 50k miles with USAir last year and I am really impressed with them. It helps to live in a hub city like Charlotte...not once was my bag misplaced or lost, one flight was cancelled and they booked me on a Delta flight and had 2 major delays but they were both when going to the NY area.....great airline.
