TO ALL: I know this post doesnt belong here but PLEASE READ
there is a site that asks anyone who has a computer to borrow its cpu when comp is inactive
What it does is Chemistry for a CURE for cancer
here is the download link
http://members.ud.com/download/gold/
Please browse the site for complete details
I just think its a great way for ALL of us to help find a cure for that nasty Disease

I am a skeptic ... and a scientist. Does anyone know more about this site and the group that sponsors it? I ask because in all of the work that I do, you don't do scientific research on other people's computers. Also, I wouldn't expect that a cure for cancer could be found by running programs on your computer. It takes long, hard hours in the lab, dedicated devices often running proprietary data aquisition and analysis programs, not CPU time on someones 200 mHz Pentium II.
The motivation to help is one of our best qualities and I don't want to dampen anyones enthusiasm. However, I do want to make sure that those generous enough to give do so in a meaningful way, and in a way that does not cause them harm.
P.S. I just showed this site to my wife who is the head of a corporate computing department, and she said "that's rather bizarre - be careful"!

It all seems legitimate and harmless enough, although I still will not be trying it.

I haven't gone to the site yet, but this isn't a rare practice in other research areas. SETI has a program that acts as a screensaver, which evaluates their data while your computer is idle. Scholarly hacking attempts (and others), use the same approach to break encryption schemes. The idea isn't that these guys need your pentium II to do this stuff, it's that if you can get thousands of computers working on data analysis, you've got the biggest super computer in the world working on it, for free.
I have no idea about this site, but I thought I'd share that this isn't really a bizzare idea in theory.

Hey guys,
If this site doesn't do what it says it does then I'm sorry for posting it.
Afriend of mine is getting his PhD in Physics and came accross this in a science magazine
He says its a very worthy cause because as fluxen said the more comp the faster it is, and since its run by Oxford university in England i figured it was safe and legit
They do offer chances to win prizes..(not my thing)
the only reasons Im doing this are:
1. Lung Cancer...Dad....Dead
2. Prostate Cancer.... Zio Francesco....Dead
3. My best friend....Complete body Cancer...Dead 3 days after 18th B-day
4. I am 32..pushing age when them shit cancers might start looking to bother me
So if i can do just a bit maybe some other people wont have to die that way
I thought it was a worthy cause, and since it was suggested by a scienctist to me I thought that it was a worth while cause,
also i thought since many of you have high speed internet and some prob have serious comp systems at work they might want to offer there cpu time, and since Cancer attacks without prejudice, maybe we can save a few fellow s2000 owners way down the road in the future
Once again, If its not a good thing or etc, Im sorry i posted it

THis is the same thing as seti@home. Seti@home uses your computer to scan through waves coming in from "outer space" and sees if there are any sign of alien life out there. This seti@home is conducted by UC Berkeley I believe.
Basically this is another company that uses your computer to perform something for them, in this case "perform valuable scientific research..."

the UD cancer thingy is sponsored by intel, that's where i found info for it. great cause, i run it on every computer i use.
