AMD or Pentium??
Wasn't happy with the way XP was running on the PIII 450, so I recently ditched it. The new system is a 1.7 P4, DDR333 RAM, Red Hat 7.2. Reused the old case so the whole upgrade cost only about $550 with a new PS and 80gig WD drive.
So far so good, still getting used to the somewhat kludge interface. But man, sendmail config (as compared to Exchange) is a biatch!
Trying to cleanse one's self of MS can be a painful experience...
Personally, I've had some bad experiences with the HiPoint 370 controller (on the ABIT KT-7 RAID motherboard), and also had to return a few IBM deskstar drives. It could be mine were isolated incident(s).
I don't think there's really much difference between the latest top CPU choices - most of us are coming from the last generation so everything will seem faster. It's really a personal choice - if you like to root for the perceived underdog, get an AMD. They're all faster than your memory or disk systems can keep up with...

Before this I had two Windows machines - one for Exchange/SQL/IIS on 2000 Server, the other was my XP workstation. This way I've got all the services in one box, and won't have to worry about hardware for another 3 years...
www.tomshardware.com is the BOMB! You should go there for your first resource. AMD is cheaper, better, faster, and utilizes less CPU core voltage. However it has not yet breached the .13 micron barrier. So before faster chips that run at speeds of 2000MHz+ AMD will need to develop the .13 micron technology.
Bottom line:
Get an AMD! It's just faster for all the "YOU" need to do.
Funny, cuz I own Intel stock!

Aaaaccckkkk!! Isn't Apple out of business yet?
Q. How do you accelerate an apple?
A. 9.8 m per second square (drop the bastard!)
Wow, some of you guys sound like you know your ----. Maybe one of you would be able to tell me if I would be able to install a quicker processor in my pute. Basically it is a low end Sony Vaio with an Athlon 1Ghz. Does AMD make a quicker processor for that style motherboard? Not that I know what I am talking about but am happy with my Athlon
