go with AMD the Athalon XP 2000+ or 2100+ is way more of a value than comparable Intel P4s.
Go with an Asus Motherboard, Geforce 4 based video card, and a decent Soundblaster card and you're rocking. You can get all this for under 1000US for sure.

going with AMD Athlon XP would be the best value and best bang for the bucks
Abit or ASUS Motherboards have all had great results with the AMD boards for overclocking.

If you want to check out some forums on computer check out hardforums.com and here is a good site for prices on computer parts, pricewatch.com

Goodluck !

My motherboard setup:

AMD Athlon 1600+
Gigabyte G-7VTXH Mainboard
256 MB DDR Memory

I got all that for $600 CDN, and it works like a dream

I most definitely recommend the AMD over intel... more value, less bugs, and generally faster on the whole

We had this debate so many times. They both make nice chips (nice because they are acceptable for today's standards and needs)
Unless you are buying a Dell and they simply don't use AMD chips, I don't see why anyone would buy a box with a P4 over athlon. It's not even a matter of buying a C240 over a Maxima because it's mercedes. It offers no better warrantee.....no better look....no better leather....I mean quality.....it's just more expensive. So why would you want to be an (fill in the blank) and pay more for the same thing. (I am not even going to start arguing how P4 is an inferior chip....let's just assume that they are the same)
Get yourself a nice asus mb with amd chipset and get yourself the best athlon XP you are willing to pay for. For me, that means athlon 1.4 or athlon XP 1600.

Of course, if you like intel inside, try QVC!

That's a joke. Whatever you do, leave QVC alone.

For Price/Performance, AMD is in the lead.

My current machine:

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
768mb PC2100
Maxtor G550 Dual DVI (why oh why can't ati or nvidia produce a dual dvi card?)
2 SGI 1600SW 17.3" 1600x1024 LCD Displays.
some other stuff.. drives, 1394, etc...

I like it!

Anybody have news on the next generation chips from AMD?

I heard great things about the Hammer line. I'm going to start on another computer and hoping to reach 5-6+ Ghz. With a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 of course.

Any news though?

I have almost the same setup as pellisS2K - Soyo Dragon plus (has on-board 5.1 surround sound so you don't need a sound card), Athlon XP 1700+, 512Mb RAM. I highly recommend this setup. I got the board and CPU for $300 then add another $120 to $150 for the RAM (price has been fluctuating lately). I like the GeForce vid cards too.

Tom's Hardware Guide does great reviews of CPUs and Mother Boards:
