Default Any DJs/Music Makers?

I've been DJing for about 5yrs now, but now making that transition to production...(I think I'm just tired of the BS the radios are constantly playing nowadays).

Anyone on here do a little DJing or produce at home? Just wondering what software you like/dislike, and how you guys chose to setup your equip and etc. (Post Pics)

Here's my setup... ?

nice trigger and mix down stuff

I use Reason for production. Do you mostly deal with samples or are you making your synths and stuff from scratch?

you need a finger pad type trigger for doing beats and percussion stuff. I never liked the keyboard for tapping out beats

I don't do any of the type of music you do, but I do a lot of recording.

Nothing crazy equipment wise, since I can't seem to stop buying guitars instead

I use a Presonus Firepod into Sonar 6
I use Wavelab for mastering
Monitors are Adams A7's ( which are awesome! ) and a set of cheap Dynaudio's as an alternate.

Mics are:
4 SM57's
2 SM58's
1 Studio Projects B1
1 CAD M149 ( great mic on a budget )
2 Earthworks Condensors matched

Preamps are Great River ME-1NV an ART something or other, and the rest is just the pre's on the Firepod

I often think about getting much better gear, but I've learned that all the gear in the world won't help me much, learning how to record, set up mic's learning about EQ etc is the only way I can make better recordings.

and trust me, it's wayyyy harder then it seems.

Remember that song " you could never be my women"? that was recorded on a $100 cassette tape 4 track, and it sounds great.

Pics are at home, but I'll post if you're interested.

Great thread idea!

My drummer wanted to build a studio. He didn't talk to me, and bought a lot of shit haphazard. . . as a result, I usually "drive" the rig when we're recording:

Digi002/Command24/MacPro/2x24" Dell Monitors
Alesis AI-3
JBL 4328LSRP - BTW, I was skeptical when he bought these - they're great if your room is (acoustically) temperamental

Rode NT-1
Sound Projects C3
Rode NT-5 (pair)
AKG D112
4 SM 57s
4 SM 58s

. . . had it been my money, it'd look a little bit more like Mindcore's system.

This is exactly going to be my next step. I really want to get serious/knowledgeable about recording. It really is a science (and def not easy). Dude you have some serious equip listed...How long have you been recording? Def would like to see your setup.

That's actually not that (bad) of a setup. It's not the best either lol. What's your take on the digidesign command 24 and the Didi002?

Well, that's the thing. . . it's all nice stuff - held together with a recording process that's a bit like duct tape. . . and money placed poorly (IMHO - my drummer just shrugs).

The Digi002 (Rack) is okay. However, if you're looking to record a band (which is our bread n' butter), the standard Digi002 or better yet, the 003, would be better choices. We haven't done a lot of sequencing, so I can't say whether ProTools sequencing is on. I'm to understand the MIDI implementation is not the best.

The Control24 is great. I like it a lot. It's nice having all the buttons there (esp. the skip, undo, and save buttons). The preamps are Focusrites and are pretty neutral. The feel of the board itself is pretty good too.

Reason is the most in depth and complete computer based synth generator I have ever seen. its like photoshop for sound. the program will go as deep as you care to take it and then say MOAR!!!!!

get version 4 and make sure you have beefy sound card (with co-processor) and a good computer too (with tons of ram) as it will require a tight synch to your USB based triggers etc. the better the computer the better the experience.

Reason is the best IMHO and its interface is fantastic (looks like real racks and components....wires in the back and everything...you hot swap and wire all the components yourself)

Infinitely stackable until your computer blows up LOL

What kind of stuff you mix? I'm considering getting a DJ/MIDI controller for myself. I've been using Virtual DJ to mix drum and bass but I wanna get a controller and a mixer so I can do it easier and faster.

How do you like that controller? I was thinking about getting the Total Control since it's made for Virtual DJ or the M-Audio Torq Exponent USB controller if I can get the cash for it.

What software do you use to mix as well?
