Default any help with wireless internet at home?

Basically, I just want to run two laptops and one desktop off a wireless router thru my existing DSL. What is a good brand for wireless nics and routers? this isn't a big deal to set up, right; just a few drivers?

We use Linksys WAP11 plus a booster WSB24

We can use our laptops all the way out to our driveway, this came in handy for kids getting wrenching advise on Chevytalk while working on cars!

Installed Linksys (use the "g" standard) with great results. I run from the second floor of my house to the den on the lower floor(about 50' and through two walls) . When I had to call for Tech support they were very helpful.

I use Linksys as well, and it is honestly one of the simplest computer things I've ever done..

I've actually setup about 10 of these using the Linksys "G". Works great. Even set it up at Rick's home in the basement and it works on his deck in the backyard. Highly recommend the Linksys. Piece of cake to setup.

Switch your family to Mac and use Airport Extreme (802.11g)

On a more serious note, I use D-Link and the reception is good and can hold up to 4 computers I believe.

I've set up many wirless networks and I gotta go with D-Link. The reason is simple: for $5 more you get double the speed (proprietary, but 100% compatible with standards) and their utility for connections on the NICs is 100x better than the other stuff out there.

And I'm not too biased. I'm conencted to a Linksys right now as I type this. D-Link is just better, IMO...

PM me for more info or to get part numbers/URLs on their 22mb routers and NICs. Buy.com has good prices on them.

Would a Dell laptop with the Dell-installed wireless nic be compatible with these linksys systems? I guess I'm asking, are they all universal, or do they communicate only brand-->brand or whatnot?

They're all compatible for the most part. The D-Links that I mentioned are compatible+. That is, they support all other hardware, but when they see other D-Links they double in speed seamlessly. Pretty cool. But yeah, any wi-fi card will let you go from Starbucks to home to work and back with little or no config changes.

I'd echo the Linksys crowd. I'm using two laptops in the house on a 802.11g setup, no deadspots and 54Mps. The thing screams and is VERY user friendly. Oh and the tech support is good too.
