It's actually a straight 6 cyl engine and from what I've heard, the Chrysler 6 is a very reliable engine.

I've had the 1999 and 2001 JGC's, both the 6 cyl (sorry no tow stories) and I like 'em more than the Explorer (better ride, smoother shifts). But we did have trouble with the a/c on the 1999 (quit a few times going across the desert !). Too early to say about the 2001.

Never owned one but know some owners. Most of what I've heard from them isn't good. Most Chrysler products do not have real good resale but the Cherokee does. I've mostly heard about small stuff breaking and overall lacking quality. My son-in-law had a Jeep (PU model) and he hated it. Lots of brake problems I believe.

I have a 94 with the V-8, 66,000 miles on it. I love it. Hardy had any problems. Tow a small travel trailer with it (20'), and it tows it well. I believe that it is rated to tow 6500lbs. It gets about 19-20mpg on the freeway, 16mpg around town. It does drop off when towing my trailer, then I get around 10mpg.

The only problem that I have had with it, was the rear passenger window would not roll up with its control. I had to use the driver control to get it to work (after a few years of owning it). There was a wire that got cut somehow.

I have owned several 4wd of all-wd, and I really like the Grand. I drive it three to four times a week to go skiing and it goes through the snow and slick very well.

As far as all the problems that the other guys have mentioned, I certainly have not experienced them. I would buy it again, but my wife would probably prefer a vehicle with a softer ride. It is quite truck like.

Thanks for all the replys and please keep them coming.

I need to buy a used one - I have a budget of about $10K. Are there any other SUV's that people would recommend? I need the truck as a tow vehicle and a daily driver - so pickups and anything too big is out.

Thanks again
