I'm a member of PMI but have never taken the PMP exam, nor do I plan to take it. I can forward your question to some of the PMPs I know, if you'd like.
Sidenote: Why don't you plan on taking the exam for certification?

I was a PMP until last year when I let my certification lapse because I didn't take the time to do the professional development credits. The PMBOK has changed since I took the exam - I believe I using the 2000 PMBOK version.
I passed the exam with 3 resources: the PMBOK, the study guide by Rita Mulcahy (http://www.amazon.com/PMP-Exam-Prep-...e=UTF8&s=books) , and a Q&A CD with lots of questions. I can't find the name of the CD, but I am pretty sure it was the one offered by Rita. I did study with a team at work, going through one chapter in the study guide each week for an hour at lunch. When it came time to get ready for the exam, I probably spend 5 - 6 hours / day over 3 weekends studying and going through the CD questions.
The exam was no big deal. First thing I did when I sat down was to do a brain dump of the project management process and all the formulas on the scrap paper. Then I went through the test and answered as many questions as I knew right away, leaving the ones I didn't know blank. Then I went back to the questions I skipped. At one point during the test I do remember not being very confident that I was getting enough questions correct. I found out later that this is not uncommon, and usually unwarranted.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any specific questions.
