Any structural engineers in here?
Hey all
Im about to attend UCSD with Structural Engineering Major.
I know its stupid but I really don't know much about this career other than some basic concepts, but i have my reasons why i chose it. Ill take it for few quarters and if it doesnt interest me i'll change majors.
Anyways, are any of you structural engineers or anything related? Do you like your job, environment, pay, etc?

Civil Engineering major here. Now work as a Land Development Engineer. I've worked with Structural Engineers in the past from a few different firms and you can expect a few basic things with the career:
1. A job right out of school, wherever you want
2. A decent starting salary, then +4%/yr after that
3. A steady 9-5 job that won't force you to bring work home
4. Depending on the size of the projects you work on, a typical project may last anywhere from a few months to 20 years, so you'll have to be able to see the big picture.
Do I like it? For now, yes. It allows me the S and is helping me stabilize things in my life. I enjoy getting out from behind my computer (sorry s2ki) and doing something new and engaging with people everyday, which is something I am not getting here.
What are you planning on doing with your degree?

Mecahnical engineers build weapons.
Civil & structural engineers build targets.

Civil & structural engineers build targets.

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints."
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."
The last said, "Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"
