Default anybody vacationed in japan before?

i'm thinking about doing a vacation in japan. figure i'll visit tokyo for a few days then head over to suzuka to see formula 1 racing.

my quick search for airline tickets from San Francisco ranges from 650 to 1000, average seems around 850. is this a good price? this is for october 2004.

what about accomodations? did you stay at fancy hotel or cheap hostel type housing?

any other info would be helpful.
thanks

I used to live there and was just there last fall on vacation with my wife.

What's your budget for hotel? You can get very decent hotels from $200/night. I wouldn't do the hostel thing.

Staying in Tokyo will be cheaper than staying in "vacation" destinations. You pay like $600/person/night at a traditional inn.

Travelling to Suzuka will be expensive. Be prepared for that.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Talk to Japanese travel agents. There's a few of them in the US, H.I.S. is one of them. I have gotten tickets under $600 easily from them - on major airlines like United and Singapore.

Japan is a lot of fun...i go there every 2 or 3 years. ton of things to do, and since the majority of the train stops are in english, it's very easy to navigate
