I don't think Middle Easterns like Americans very much.
You can always do what I did. If someone came up to me in an unfriendly place and asked if I am American, I say, "No, I'm Canadian, ya betcha!". Everybody gets along with Canada, and I grew up not that far away.

Or you can do what Americans do while IN America. You'll rarely find an American here. Most people will tell you they're Irish/Italian/Polish/German/<fill in the blank>.

It used to crack us up as kids when American tourists would tell us "Yeah, Ah'm Irish, fer sure". Um yeah, ok...

Truth be told, I would never go to the Middle East or Africa right now, regardless of how supposedly safe some places are. Bad luck has a way of finding trouble very quickly.

If you are ....in scot's terms... "a cracka," then dont bother dressing up. Not only will you not blend in, but you might actually insult them. I personally, wouldnt go to that part of the world for now....they are not friendly places to Americans. Other's will tell you otherwise, but its your life....gamble as you see fit.

I was in Bahrain for 6 months. We had a flight into Saudi over night and the bird broke down so we were there for a week. If you are ever in a neighborhood with Black flags get the F out of there. That is anti-anything other than muslim town.

Not really! Though Canadians are viewed as less aggressive than Americans, they're still viewed as similar. There are foreigners who don't like Canadians also. Mexicans, on the other hand, are well-liked among the international community.

I'd been there a couple years back... if you plan on having a good time, make friends with someone who's been there for a while... there are many "underground" places where you can party. Just like mentioned earlier, there is a difference b/w whats said and what really happens. Saudi is pretty strict if they think you're arab, otherwise theyre more lineant (s/p?) on americans... wearing a nice dress shirt and slacks is the way to go, btw
