I had the same thing as flojo. They paid some NADA value for the car, then I bought it back at the salvage price and repaired it myself.

My mom just had an accident on Wednesday and I'm pretty sure her car will be totalled. She'll likely just take a check.

I think there are several different NADA prices available. (probably based on retail, trade-in, etc, like kbb.com). I'm guessing they offer the lowest value, and IIRC it's significantly less than what you'll find on kbb.com, too.

But, yeah... the agents are really easy to work with.

actually, that reminded me of about a year ago, when my mom totalled her civic.

'02 EX sedan, with maybe 30k on it... I can't remember exactly what she got, but I have some friends who work for Progressive, and I had them run the info on their computers for what they'd use to determin the value of the vehicle. State Farm ended up paying her more than what Progressive's system pulled, which is pretty much what State Farm uses as well....

just remember, State Farm is THE biggest insurance company in the country. they have some weight to throw around.....

Never totaled a car with them, but did have multiple claims with State Farm (not sure if it's a different underwriter in Canada) and have always had excellent experiences with them. I've had claims due to theft, damage, and accidents, totaling well over $20k and I wouldn't hesitate to say it's been a pleasure to work with them.

None of the claims were as a result of something I did wrong, always a criminal or other negligent driver that caused it.

I paid $32.5k for my brand new G35C 6MT base model in 2002. It was totalled in 2004 with 36k miles and they gave me $28.5k for it. In my experience, State Farm was easy to work with and didn't lowball me at all. It did help that the car had a high resale value at the time and most 6MT's that they compared it to had at least the premium package of sunroof/Bose.

State Farm is one of the better insurance companies to work with. It just comes down to the adjuster that handles your claim.

Best advice I can give you is, if you feel the price they offer you is low. Don't accept it. You can fight for the value of your car. Look around at prices people are selling the same car for. Use that as your basis of arguement.

I'm currently in a claim with State Farm as well. Fortunately, I don't think they're any where near totaling the car... it shouldn't be more than $8k damage... though they noted they'd have to "run their figures" to make sure.

I'm interested to hear what your result is... good luck to you!

I was hit a few years ago and State Farm paid me the much higher NADA value rather than the lower KBB value. They also allowed me to replace the week old tires with used tires that held air. They also allowed me to keep it at my house so I could remove my rollbar and any other mods I wanted to keep. I couldn't have asked for better treatment.

That's interesting that you mentioned that, because my mom said that her car that was in an accident had almost-new tires on it, too. Maybe they'll let her do something like that, also.

Here at the dealership I would say at least 50-60% of all customers have insurance with State Farm...Guess they're doing something right
