It looks really convenient, but does it really work as advertised? I don't have a power supply where I want to work on an install for my car, and was wondering if this is a good alternative to the gas operated soldering irons.

They do work. I have read mixed reviews about them, but the reviews are from guys who own $150+ soldering irons so they are affincinados and wont buy crap. They say it works but its not the best. Depending on what your doing and what kind of solder your using it most likely will work.

That's exactly why I ask. I didn't want to end up with something that doesn't work as advertised (i.e. gets only hot enough to melt butter...)

ninethreeeleven: thanks for the response. My applications will be few and far between, so this will probably be fine for me.
