Can't stand VSS as far as functionality goes. I've used it for pushing sites out before, but working on the same pages with a few other developers - it just aint good.

No unix boxes where I'm at. so it must run on windows (win2k adv server).

if not, any other recommendations?

Using WinCVS http://www.wincvs.org/ under win2k on the server and win2k, nt, and win95 as clients.

Once you get used to it, works just fine ...

Any specific questions?

Have fun,
Derek

not really anything specific. I guess I was looking out for more warnings against using WinCVS rather than recommendations. Sometimes the dist's of some apps onto windows are a bit flakey because of the windows nature of being flakey itself.

thanks, I'll go play now.

Here we use Perforce. It does alright, but has a few quirks. And I'm pretty sure its not cheap.

I agree with Josh3i0 and cthree as well. Just tell your company how much you could save on CAL's and OS cost alone by going with Red Hat. Then download the latest version of Samba (free download) and it will even emulate PDC's and BDC's in an NT domain. We won't even tell them how much faster and more stable it will run. After all that, you can load webmin and never leave your PC again. Just a thought.

believe me, I know about cost effectiveness with *nix systems. but with this particular project, we're working hand-in-hand with another company and *nix isn't an option in their configuration or expertise - so, because of the ways we're tying into their systems, they aren't allowing *nix systems on their network.

I would certainly push for a lot of the *nix stuff for speed and security's concerns, especially since we are working with financial and personal information, but like I said, its not an option and is out of my control.

regarding pdc's and bdc's - doesn't exist with win2k - you just have dc's and a few different active directory configurations that can be administered. so, having a pdc isn't really a concern either.
