ARG! I need a career!
I am 36 and have a BS in Accounting from a shitty state school (IUP). I would say that Accounting is a horribly boring field. I attempted the CPA thing and hated it. I am currently the Controller of a Manufacturing company. We sell $90M a year. You think selling TV's is unrewarding? Try this shit!
The CPA's that audit my company are usually stressed. They spend an entire week away from home, then fly back for the weekend, and back to us for a 2nd week of auditing...... sounds like a good way to go blind (if you know what i mean....
....)
I love working with people, but they pay me pretty well and I spend most of my day on the internet....(sometimes boring).... plus I am a small % owner now, so I am stuck here for a little while...
Have you thought about selling cars? Are you looking for a sales job?
I have a neighbor who sells "forklifts" (just drives around in his car and annoys people) and makes well over $100k. I am sure there are other similar "sales" type jobs that you can do just as well....

O ya... if you are just looking to make $$$$, then I would have to say you need to go learn something that you can fairly easily use to start your own company.
My wife wrote mortages for idiot places for a couple of years to learn how, then we started a company.... we hired a handful of employees (straight commission, all part time, etc.....) and it has worked out great. We had our house built with an office in the front. The Company has been in business for about 11 years now with a few years well over $100k....and she doesn't work all that hard.....
A friend of ours has a Health Insurance consulting business... she learned the business working for people then branched off by herself and is now making well over $100k also... she does not work all that hard either. She makes ~3% on all premiums and works out of her house with no employees.

I have an accounting degree. I would have made more money and had more fun as a pimp though.
Little known secret you can go to school for 18 months to become an air traffic controller, no degree needed. pays into 6 figures.

Prior experience or training in air traffic control is not required. However, candidates must have three years of progressively responsible work experience, have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor

I'm a CPA, and I've been doing tax for 6 years.
I thought I would give you realistic information about working in an accounting firm. I agree accounting is one of the more versatile majors you can be in because every business needs accounting/tax functions. The industry is facing shortages of talents because most people don't like the hours.
The starting salary is 40K to 60K, depending on the size of firm, and your school and degree. Big 4 offers new grads with master degree high 50K as starting. If you get hired into specialty practice areas like consulting, M&A, or international, you can expect the salary to be a few thousands more than the normal starting salary.
However, making 80K in two years is extremely difficult. You will need to make manager to earn that much. A typical person makes manager in 5 to 7 years. Some longer, some a little shorter.
Expect to work a lot of hours during busy season. About 13-hour days on the weekdays, and 8-hour days on Saturdays. Occasional Sundays.
Sometimes I wish I didn't choose this career path.

I guess the #s your quoting is for middle america. Here in NYC, we're starting Accounting Grads/CPAs $70k. Those with an MBA get $90k+ and are more into consulting.

in NYC though you get one of those freaking 700sq ft apartments for about $3k a month.... here in the sticks you can rent or buy a 2600sq ft house for under $2000 a month...
Our CPA's are out of NYC (Mcgladrey and Pullen). I think about half half of them don't even own cars.... blaaa
It would be neat to live in NYC for one year to see what it is like....I would go insane without a car and living in an apartment the size of my garage....
