Default Automatic license disqualification - draconian Australian laws

Did you guys know that here in Australia they have recently introduced a law whereby if you let your license expire (i.e. you forget to renew it) you are slapped with an automatic 6 month disqualification.

That makes a memory lapse a greater crime than a first time drink driving or dangerous driving offense. Where's the logic in that I ask you?

Unbelievable isn't it?

I continually find it surprising how suppressing Aussie laws are. Their Internet censorship laws are ridiculous, and now this. In the states we may have a few problems with people shooting up schools and stuff, but at least we have our freedom.

agreed, or at least a 'sense' of freedom which we dont really have.

btw, regarding shooting up schools - oddly enough, no matter how much the press pushes it - statistics show that over the past 10 years - violence in school has DECREASED, not increased. Its just that the few stories that are so tragic are exploited so heavily by the news media looking for excuses.

Yeah Muz I couldn't believe it when I heard it too.

The same penalty for drink driving as forgetting to renew your license?

Looks like it might be time to move to China, were probably less likely to have our rights infringed.

I, for one, would probably end up without a license for 6 months. That's just ridiculous.

Not sure if I'd choose Draconic to describe this law, Muz. My word of choice would probably be either assanine or stupid. If they want to enforce people renewing their license in a timely manner, jack the fee for a late renewal up. The reality is that most people will continue driving whether or not they have their license renewed, and just hope to not get caught.
