Band of Brothers
Anybody watch this HBO miniseries? Not here to debate whether it was good or not, but rather to say that it got me thinking about Tom Brokaw's book, The Greatest Generation. In the book, Brokaw makes the assertion that the World War II generation was the greatest American generation because it helped preserve democracy throughout the world.
My question: How do you think this current generation stacks up against others in American history?

agreed knowledge. I watched episode 9 today - I have most of them already, only missing 4 and 7 and awaiting 10.
similar thoughts came to me today, when schooling is more about finding the answers - looking up the answer on the net, rather than the question and process involved instead. we've become very lazy and are passing it onto the current generation. soon, books will be of yesteryear and you'll only need to know what you want to look up. again this might be a small reflection on how I see myself partaking in studies and readings these days but it was enhanced by how a friend's son was working on a project this evening. easy.. yes, but you miss all the fun useless information and then without all of the useless information you'll never know the why's and surroundings, only the answer.
that generation in BoB was quite amazing. I love the stories and want to watch more every time.

I agree that BOB is a great mini-series.
My father and I have talked some about his youth. When I was 16, I was trying to hot rod my car and pick up girls (not necessarily in that order). He was doing his homework by kerosene lamp in a bunker in Glascow, Scotland, waiting on the German's to come for their nightly bombing.
At 17, he and his group of friends ran off to Edinbourgh to lie about their ages and join up. Within 6 months he was a Lt. in North Africa leading 250 Eqyptians in battles against Rommel.
My older brother, Alexander, was named after a pilot who tried to torpedo the Bismarck (sp) in a 20 year old bi-plane. He didn't make it. I was named after a paratrouper. Ever seen the movie, "A Bridge Too Far"? That ill-founded British engagement was mentioned in BOB. Alistair didn't make it either.
The WWII Generation is probably the greatest American generation that we know off. I also think that the 1776 guys must have been something to put together what they did (democracy was far from a common idea) and defeat the world power of the time.

I went out and bought the DVD set a few weeks ago. I hadn't seen it on HBO before, because I don't have HBO. This is by far, the best mini-series/movie I've seen. That's my honest opinion. I also believe that the WWII generation is the greatest generation. I see an elderly man wearing a Pearl Harbor hat, or some other Navy or Marine or any other military affiliated clothing from that generation, I just kind of watch them. Think about what they went through, what they've seen. I truly see them in a whole different light. They have my highest respect.
The same can be said about Canadians (NOT meaning any offence to Americans). The WWII generation from Canada was, in my opinion, simply the cream of the crop. When asked, men all across the nation dropped their pens, their rakes, their lives, and went overseas to battle. Dieppe... Vimy Ridge... D-Day... to paraphrase Churchill.. "Their Finest Hour"
