Default Beer question:

Hey, I'm no beer expert, but I've found I enjoy lots of the darker beers that come in pint cans and have widgets in them.

I'm trying to gather samples for a taste test, and so far I've found:

Guiness
Murphy's
Boddington's

Can anyone else suggest a somewhat easy to find dark beer in a can w/widget for this test?

Those are the good ones with widgets that I can think of. . . there's a few lighter ales that have them. . .

. . . and Newcastle ain't dark.

I like Newcastle, yes. I was thinking about throwing it into the test as well, even though it doesn't meet the can w/widget qualifier, nor is it quite as dark as the others listed. But an excuse to buy Newcastle... hmm...

new castle is semi dark i love it!

the only beer i know that has widgets is guiness, but they also have a guiness black and tan thats pretty good. negra modelo isn't really a full dark beer but it's good too.

Hm. Negra Modelo is on my list to try. How does it compare to either Newcastle or Guiness?

it's a darker corona type of taste IMO. i've never been a full dark guiness type of beer drinker but i love new castle and negra modelo. i can tolerate boddingtons.

If a beer needs a widget I'm not sure I'm still calling it beer.

I don't know about widgets, but I think you just like more rich dark beers:

Dos XX's Dark, Michelob Amber Bock, Black & Tan is great, Heineken Dark, oh and you'll probably like the Sam Adams line: Boston Lagger, and Dark.

Try them all the same day and get back to us at the end of the day with your favorite one.

You know, I thought that too.

Boddington's is labeled as "ale"
Guinness is labeled as "stout" (stout what?)
Murphy's is labeled as Pasteruized Stout "beer"

So... yeah. Zat clear things up at all?

Anyone tried Beamish? Thinking of adding it to the fray, although I've never had it before.
