Default Best Digi Cam for less than $500?

First, my Cannon Powershot A80 is kaput. I have pink line at the top of every pic I take. This is not something I can fix, is it (anyone know for sure)?

That leaves me with only one other option, which is to buy a new one. I'm a not a photo guru, so one that is no more than $500 (a guess) or less would be good?

TIA

I am interested in this as well. I was tempted several weeks ago to get one myself and start taking higher quality photos but was a little overwhelmed by the options and would like hear what others recommend.

It would be nice if it can be both portable and be able to produce best picture.

I saw a Cannon one at Costco that was 12 MP (best nowadays)? That was at the same price as mine that just broke (only 4 MP). I paid about $350 for it.

Don't care for the portability. It can be a bit big. Just want a super good quality pics. The only spec I know is MP. I know the higher the MP the better, but what else is there to look at when buying a digicam...?

I'd be inclined to go for quality optics over pixel count.

Check out the new Sony line. They have a digicam with a 30G internal hard drive (no tape) and a 800x digital zoom over a 36x optical zoom. It's priced below $500.

in my experience sony cams are the worst. well small portable ones are. it may have all the features you want but pic quality isn't so good at all.

You are correct..... I was confused and thought the question was for Digital camcorders, not Digital cameras.

Canon is the way to go for cameras.

I have a Canon S80 or something like that... Actually, this reminds me to look for it again...I think it may have been swiped during our Open House...damn!

But AgS2K, an avid photographer loves the Canon brand and recently added a G9 (I believe) to his collection...he seemed to love it. You may want to PM him for more information/his take on it.

I saw it advertised in Best Buy or Circuit City for under $500
