Best headphones (in your opinion)
I have a pair of HD600's and a custom tube headphone amp (as well as a pair of 570's an a SS amp on my other box). Open can's are great if you don't mind other folks hearing what you are listening to.
The sound is impressive for the price, electrostatics are nicer, but you are into the 10,000 dollar range with a good set.
I don't like Grado's, not because of the sound, but because of the pain they cause after an hour or so of wear.
Those of you still in the 100-200 dollar Sony and what not range have no idea what you are missing with a nice set of headphones and a good, clean amp.

Nothing beats noise isolation in-ear phones if you are getting sound from an iPod, computer, or any slightly noisy environment.

I have these Shure E2C's - they are in the same league as the Etymotics ER-6 earphones. The ear canal flanges on the Etymotics are better, but the cords, jack and price of the Shures is better. I'd get the Shures again if I had to, mostly because the Etymotics seemed a little bit delicate and I'm always doing stupid things like getting the cord snagged in my coat zipper. I got my E2C's online for less than $70 but they don't seem to be that cheap any more... Sony makes some in-ear phones but none of them that I've tried compare to Shure or Etymotics.
Shure E5C's give equivalent or better sound compared to the best headphones I've used, but they're a wee bit pricey ($500). I've tried the Etym ER-4S phones ($300 or less if you shop around) but I think you should go with the Shures if you want to spend that much money.

Grado SR-325 with headphone amp from my Audible Illusions Preamp.
Sony MDR 888 for my ipod.
The Grado is very transparent and full sounding. I have not tired from long periods of wearing them since they have the new cupped cushion pads.
The Sony is just as transparent but more neutral sounding.
