Whatever fits your foot the best. Everybodys feet are shaped differently, so for some XX brand is the best, while for others, XX brand is the best. In my opinion, there isn't one shoe out there that is the best... it is whatever fits the best, and that will vary for everyone.
Also, it depends on what kind of running you plan on doing as to what kind of shoe you should be buying. Will you be running on the track? at a dirt trail? for how long will you be running? will you ever compete in your training shoes? There are just too many variables to answer your question. I suggest go to a good running store. Here in Austin we have a store called Runtex, and they will let you try on several different shoes and run in them. It really comes down to what do you want the show to do, and how comfortable is the shoe.

I been running for about 21 years, and I only run in Nike. I've tried other shoes and they don't fit the same. Unfortunately you need to run in a givev pair of shoes for 15 to 20 minuets before you'll know if you like them, so doing a lap around the store won't help.

Just make sure wherever you buy them, they have a good return policy.

I have the Nike Air Presto cuz you can build your own online. You can pick the color, texture, and you can even ID it up to 8 characters. It's basically a sock with a sole, and it's crazy light. I don't know if it's the best, but it's comfortable and you get to cusomize it. You place an order and you get it in a month. Actually, I don't even jog. I play ball in them.

I use Mizuno. There are very few makers that specialise in running shoes (rather than cross trainers or basketball shoes or whatever). Mizuno is one. Whatever you get make sure it is light and has a flexible sole with good cushioning and support. Many "running" shoes I looked at weigh a ton and seem to be made for looks.

I was a nike runner for the longest time. Then, I finally tried New Balance. I always wondered why New Balance shoes were always so expensive. Sure they don't have the style of Nikes, but man ... New Balance makies the most comfortable running shoes I've ever worn. I will never run on any other after that. Also, many other runners (pros and amateurs) swear by them.

i personally like nike's myself, sometimes outragous styling but its function over style right? ie, nike shoxs, you know the shoes that go boing!, are very comfy running shoes. i also like new balance 991's classic looking running shoe with comfort as well....
