How about depositing them into some homeless people's laps?

At least the banks provide some value for the fees. If you want to help out the less fortunate donate the coins to a homeless shelter or food bank.
Coinstar's free if you turn it in to a gift card. I always do amazon and get my full amount. You may need to check their website though before you go to make sure the machine you're planning on using offers gift cards. The ones around here at wal-marts don't issue gift cards so I have to go to one at a different location.
The credit union that I got my S2k loan through has a machine that does it for no charge. It has been a bit less convenient to use them as my only bank but it is totally worth it to say
to J.P. Morgan and BofA. Boycot the monopolies.

Dump in a bunch of coins. 20 seconds later it prints out a receipt that I take to the teller to deposit into my account. Easy peazy. Two 12-oz plastic cups full of coins usually works out to about $80-100.
I have a 5 gallon glass water bottle half full of change. The good thing is a burglar couldn't steal it. The bad thing is I can't lift it either. At one point there was a few thousand $$ in there but I've lost count. I'm going to Italy on that change some day.

Some wells fargo locations have coin counters, but if yours doesn't you can ask them to ship it off to be counted. I used to work as a teller and we did it all the time, it takes about a week but it's free and they just put it in your account.
