A blog is a contraction of web log, and lots of people have them. Usually, someone has a web site where they post inane crap that happened that day. People used to put these things in diaries, where the whole idea was no-one but you would read it. Now, people put this kind of thing on their blog, and ask people to read it by joining groups of other bloggers.

In my experience, only people with nothing really to say have blogs. Sure, occasionally there is the person who inexplicably has reliable internet access during a war or something, and their blog becomes a surrogate news source for some people.

I don't visit any blogs, because the vast majority of people should really keep their thoughts to themselves (perhaps myself included). Everyone thinks they are Norman Mailer, when really they are a cross between Judith Krantz and Rush Limbaugh, with none of the literary talent. That last bit is sarcasm, BTW. Seriously, you know that guy that works in the mail room at work, that never seems to brush his teeth much or wash his clothes very often, and doesn't own an ironing board? He has a web log, and tell me you really want to read how he lost his job when he posted pictures of work on his home page. Or how about that girl who works in the office down the block, who you can tell is dying to tell someone about her near-lesbian experience at a party one night at her friend Brenda's boyfriend's college buddies' place. She has a blog, and you can bet your ass she goes into great detail about her feelings for "Sheila" once a week at least, but is too "shy" to tell "Sheila" that she really wants to... You get the picture.

I think it's great that people spend time writing each day, as it is probably the only way to become a better writer, but that doesn't mean I want to read it. It might be better if they wrote long letters to their family and friends, and actually were telling someone who cares. It can be fascinating for a while, but eventually I get bored with other people's personal dramas, especially when they refuse to post nude pictures of their hot chick friends. Go figure.

You have to keep in mind that they are only telling you the parts they think are interesting. And haven't we all been telling someone something we thought was fascinating and found our listener falling asleep?

That is my senior thesis on blogs. Thank you and good night.
