I don't know about Muslims, but a jillion years ago, the rabbi's put in a law against the consumption of pork because of trichinosis. The jewish law was not based on religious grounds but was intended to protect the health of the jewish tribes. It is just something that has stayed as part of the religion to this day, even though it is now known that proper cooking avoids the problem.

Christian followers mostly came from the Jews, but because of something Christ said (and I am not a good bible quoter so someone else might need to chime in) that swept clear all jewish law.

I would guess the Muslim tenet is because of something similar, health reasons before and understanding of what caused the disease.

But anyway, brain worms sounds nasty.
