For years GM showed their contempt for the buyer.

Put a large-displacement engine into an ancient chassis and charge a cheap price, and people won't notice how crappy they are.

I have driven them on several occasions(Camaros, Firebirds, etc). Good engines.....very torquey(obviously), good V8 sounds, great value/performance/for the money, etc.

But, I did not like their chassis. They 'felt' sloppy and ponderous; almost as if the car is carrying too much weight in the wrong places. And almost every one of the ones I drove had numerous squeaks and rattles, even relatively new ones.

And as for the aesthetics, it is in the eye of the beholder. I personally do not like the enormous front/rear overhangs on those cars.

Now, if GM placed those venerable small blocks into a tidier and tighter chassis, I would even consider one.

My .02 cents.

It is really spelled Camaro. I had a 79 Camaro in high school that had a hi-po 350 in it and would spank almost anything else. I also had a Trans Am and a Formula Firebird. I loved them back then but once I got my first taste of Japanese sports cars, my first being my 89 RX7 Turbo, I just could not go back. IT is a shame to see them go but I haev a feeling they will be back in one form or another pretty soon.

Yeah, in a year or two, you'll probably get the "retro" Camaro to come back.

The decision to stop was made at least six months ago. That's when some Delphi engineers told me. It still surprises me slightly, even knowing the factory capacity was never fully used. I thought of it as a popular car(s) (F-bodies). Mustangs sell so much better but they are less expensive, smaller, and generally slower.

Even though I never owned one I'm sad to see them go. They are an American icon of speed, like the vette but for all the joe-normal guys. The 'replacement' in 2004-ish time frame is going to be a pale imitation of a muscle car, IMO. Most likely it will be built on one of GM's world-car platforms, maybe even FWD (gasp).

I had a 96' Z28SS Camaro -- much more pleased with the S2000 ... had a Firebird years ago -- don't miss either of them.

The 4th Gens (1993 on) don't have rattle/squeak problems. Here's the interesting part: Know how they did it? Velcro. No kidding.

BTW, I've used this trick on several cars. If you can determine the part that rattles or squeaks, put a couple of pairs of velcro dots behind it. This is a good, cheap and permanent solution that works especially well for interior trim. Learned it from the Camaro.
