just add the insurance to your plan now and then wait til the end of the month and call it in. worked for me...i have kept the insurance thru lockton ever since.
i am probably on about my 6th phone between upgrades and insurance phones. never paid more than the deductible that lockton forces you to pay.

i think it is around $3.95/mo. and yes it covers broken phones and theft. If you tell them it was stolen however, they require a police report. you can apply for the insurance throught attws.com as well as pay your bill and change you plan there. Check it out, it is worth the extra money.
is your phone visibly damaged? if not, it may qualify for a warranty replacement without needing insurance at all...of course you will have to neglect to tell them that you dropped it.

Get the insurance. It's worth it. I destroyed my nokia 8260 by running over it with my s2000 (don't ask). Thanks to insurance I had a new phone in 2 days. They replace upto 2 phones/year I think. You still have to pay a $30 deductible per replacement.
I still have my old AT&T Motorola, and I wouldn't mind giving it to you; however, I don't think it's as simple as that. AT&T uses TDMA, not GSM, so there's no "chip" that you can switch out. I think a rep at an AT&T store will have to do something to the phone to make it work for you. If you don't mind doing that, you can go ahead and have my Motorola . . .
Of course, adding insurance and then making a claim sounds like a good idea, too. Besides, the Nokia 8260 is probably much better than my old phone (doesn't even have the time on it
).

AT&T uses TDMA, not GSM, so I'm not sure what you mean about the GSM comment and the chip. Each phone has an ESN and an AT&T rep just has to enter that with your account. The phone then gets linked with your number. And presto you have service. You could do it without the rep, but you have to know phone key codes that would send the ESN to the network. It's been two years since I worked for MOT and I forget the codes. Sorry.
