Well It's time to pick up a notebook computer. I know SXGA is double pixels vs XGA, but would I notice a difference between SXGA and UXGA?

I'm sure there's some computer people out there that know this stuff much better than myself.

I'm not too sure about the SXGA...I know Dell has an SXGA+ display that runs 1400x1050 and an UXGA that runs 1600x1200. I personally have the 15" UXGA display on mine & I love it. I guess a lot of it depends on what you're going to be using it for. Running the UXGA at resolutions lower than 1600x1200 definitely has a noticeable (bad) affect on display quality, so if you're wanting to run something lower than 1600x1200, you'll probably want to consider SXGA+ or SXGA (1280x1024?). For what it's worth, I've seen the SXGA+ that Dell has, and it has a really sharp picture too; I just preferred having the additional "real estate" that the UXGA offers.

If you play games or watch alot of DVD, then you should get UXGA. Having that will only fit more pixels into the screen (I think). I have a Dell Inspiron with a 14" screen with SXGA and its better than my montior for my main computer.

Yeah...everyone is right. You will really only be able to tell the difference in that you can make the resolution higher.

i have a sony vaio with a 15" SXGA+ as well as a toshiba satellite that has a 12.1-inch XGA TFT screen.

the toshiba's screen is much duller than the vaio.. especially under bright lights. max resolution on the vaio is 1400x1050@60hz and its absolutely beautiful. the satellite is 1024x768@60hz i really wish i could tweak my res down to 1600x1200 but that wont be possible..

i also own a older gateway solo.. notebook screens have come a looooooooong way since my active matrix pos!

I had to make the same decision recently and went with the UXGA. After seeing it in person I'm really glad I did. If you need realestate (graphics, programming, spreadsheets, etc.) go for it.

Ok, now if I plan to watch a DVD every now and then, show video capture and do basic stuff otherwise with a UXGA what video card memory would be a good idea? 16, 32 or 64 MB. I doubt that I'll play any games on this.

32 should be fine. People have been doing those tasks on laptops with 16 or 32mb for a long time. The 64mb option really isn't necessary except for power users and gamers.

Those new dells. I'm on the fence between Dell and Compaq. Compaq offers a $99 accidential insurance (some piece of mind is nice).

We retooled the network here. Broadband, networking and wireless networking. SO i can go from the office to the shop, to the garage etc. Maybe live video installation feeds in the future?
