Default car alarm rant

I'm posting this in OT since I'm blatantly planning to rant.

begin{rant}
Seriously - what is UP with ANYONE who thinks aftermarket car alarms are worth ANYTHING? As far as I can tell, all they do is ANNOY THE HELL out of anyone within a mile of the damn thing. An alarm or immobilizer provides marginal protection against unsophisticated hoodlums who wanna heist the car on an impulse; if you want anything beyond that, you're kidding yourself.

But let's review the arguments, shall we?

"My BEATOFF9000 has motion sensors so people won't key it or cut the top."
BULLSH!T! Hell, I'm MORE tempted to key any car that starts blaring at me when I walk by. And what are you gonna do about it? NOTHING, cause you're inside and I'll be long gone when you get out, dumba$$! (Note: I've never keyed a car, and never will, but you get my point.)

"But the motion sensors mean I can leave the top down and no one will steal my $1000 digicam I left on the passenger seat."
BULLSH!T! I'm long gone by the time you get back, remember? And witnesses? I'll just tell 'em I forgot it and was just running back.

"The stock immobilizer and OEM alarm are worthless - anyone can bypass those."
BULLSH!T! Can YOU?! And if you CAN, that means you have one of those cool "Ghost Dog" gadgets that will get past your BEATOFF9000 just as easily!! Oh, and did you ever hear of a flatbed? If they want your car, they'll get it, period. If you want it back, get LoJack.

"Surely all the good citizens who hear my BEATOFF9000 blaring and waking them up in the middle of the night will drop whatever they're doing and come running, ready to fight to the death to save my POS car from any and all harm!!"
OK, no one really argues that, but that's the inane message I hear every time one of these things starts screaming. Hell, every time I hear one going off I just start rootin' for the thief: "Go, buddy, go! You got it!!" And if that fails, I just hope the battery dies.

So in summary: Who died and gave you the right to annoy the sh!t out of everybody because you're too damn cheap to pay for insurance?!
end{rant}

Phew. Had to get that off my chest.

Rebuttals welcome.

Just as you don't care if someone is trying to steal my S2K with a BeatOff9000 Alarm........

......it blares at all odd hours of the night, waking you up, waking up your baby who will cry through the night now that she's up, wake up the neighbors dog which will bark all night long.......

...I don't mind if the alarm doesn't stop a thief, doesn't stop vandalism, doesn't stop any kind of perps (that's why I have insurance)............

....I don't mind if no one else pays attention, and only bothers YOU............

I'm with you, John. But the insurance thing is the best reason to have an alarm.

I am convinced that a flashing red light that you can get a Radio Shack connected to the fusebox is enough to make most perps *think* the car has an alarm and will move on. No sirens, no annoying noises. Perps want the easiest (read: non-alarmed) vehicles and anything that makes the theft appear more complicated is a good thing...

Alarms are pretty useless, but all my cars (except my 4Runner, which just has a red light.. ) have had alarms...almost all of them have been broken into, as well.

I say stop the madness...

Nice rant...

Alarms aren't completely useless. I had my old car broken into, but the alarm went off and the thief just ran off. It just takes that one time that the alarm saves the car for it to be worth it.

Also, on my Prelude, there have been 2 times when seperate cars have hit it and caused the alarm to go off. If I hadn't heard it, the drivers would've just drove away.

What you're really pissed off at are the people that set their seneors wrong and have them too sensitive. A good alarm installer will set the sensors correctly.
