Default car washes in the USA

i was watching an old episode of Arliss the other day and it had Kirby's car wash with the "special hot wax" when the red light turned on.
anyway, what are the car washes in the USA really like in terms of service, etc or do most car enthusiasts wash and wax themselves because they know what they're doing and what products they're actually using instead of some guy scratching their car up.

It all depends on the person and the car or cars they own. For my S, it will never see a car wash facility. I even tell the dealer not to wash the car. I want to be the one that does that. For my truck, I used to take it to the car wash becuse it sits outside and the winters can be brutal, with all the salt and stuff on the roads. Now that I don't work, I wash and wax the truck as well. Not just a picky as I am with the S.
