Default Celebrity Causes

My Rant
So celebrities have always tried to raise awareness for causes, but it seems like lately they have been going into overdrive to get in the news and promote something.

My problem is:
the average american makes around $30-40k per year.
I am above average and make around $100k per year.
the average loudmouth celebrity makes $5-25 million per film, plus other residuals.

doing the math, the celebrity trying to raise money not only makes more in 1 film than I can make in 50-250 years, but for the average american, they make 833 years worth.

So if they REALLY believe in their cause, why do they have $5million+ houses (plural), drive $500k cars as their DD, travel to europe and asia as if it was driving to the mall.

Examples are Jim Carrey (made $20m/film 10 yrs ago) Brangelina, and Al Gore (how a senator/VP making under $200k can afford as many houses and jets as he does is another issue).

whenever i see a celebrity cause NOT directly followed up by a multi-million dollar check i immediately write it off and couldnt care less.

anyone else see an issue with this?

Dave

I guess I am with you.

I know Sandra Bullock has written a couple million dollar checks for certain things (Katrina fund)

But it depends on the celeb. When I give to charity, I don't publicise it, and I suspect many of them don't either. For all you know, Jack Nicholson has given $100 million to puppies with no legs.

I don't have a problem with celebrities lending their name to a cause they believe in, I just have a problem when celebrities talk down to the average person, ESPECIALLY about politics when most of them don't know their head from their ass.

I think, say... mountain gorillas should be protected. If I was a celeb, what would be wrong with me saying please help protect mountain gorillas?

1. Tax issues

2. Publicity: If you're riding high, your agent needs you out there to get booked, and if you're at a low point, your agent demands that you get your name out there to get booked.

3. Trying to add meaning to a career that can suck any real life out of you. Remember, being a celebrity is fundamentally about image. That'd grate on me after a while.

I loved how Paris Hilton jumped on Diddy's Vote or Die bandwagon in '04 and she didn't even register to vote

I have heard that sometimes celebs are actually paid to be at certain events.

Too much money and too much time usually results in too much "holier than thou" complex

People as a whole spend entirely too much time talking about how things should be and not enough time actually making it happen. That said, I am going outside to make a difference.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." - attributed to Marx.

However, I also wonder how you can put a dollar amount on awareness that is raised, which is huge.
