Cell phone numbers released to telemarketers?
Got this in an email from someone I trust, so it's not a junk email. Anyone know anything about this? Is this true?

REMINDER....On March 24, 2007, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
.....THESE CALLS WILL COST YOU.. BOTH IN MINUTES AND POSSIBLY OTHER CHARGES
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
You may also visit http://www.donotcall.gov to register your phone number.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.
If calling to register you must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.
It take about 20 seconds.

Of course if someone you trusts forwards email crap to you, then it MUST be trustworthy right? Anything you get emailed to you like this should just be assumed totally false until proven otherwise since more than 99% is total crap.

So do the cell phone companies make money by selling the phone numbers? Is that how is works?
If you get it in an email then it's probably bullshit. Just follow that rule and you will be right 99% of the time.
not to toot my own company, but a while back, a few wireless companies decided to band together and create a wireless phone directory. Verizon refused citing privacy issues. that project has since died down when other wireless companies decided to follow verizon's move.
If you do not put your number on any registration form, any sweepstakes, and only your friends have it, you will never receive a telemarketing call. if you only have a cell phone for a personal phone, and no house phone, you might, give that your credit card, or some company you registered your home address with could share it.
Putting your number on the do not call list is a good first step, but the loophole is that if you gave out the number for a cause, say democratic party, or the rescue squad, they can call all they want...

Honestly, when it comes to Verizon, its more about control in my eyes. If Verizon can't have both hands on the wheel, it doesn't want to be along for the ride at all.
I only give out my cell number though, and I've never gotten marketing calls.
