Cipro -- Up Close and Personal
I've been battling a finger infection for almost two weeks. After emergency surgery a week ago Sunday, they took a culture and sent it to a lab. Thursday they found out it was E Coli and put me on Cipro, the infamous Anthrax antibiotic. I took one Thursday late afternoon and one Friday morning. I got the first five side effects listed on the drug fact sheet -- BIG TIME! I woke up Friday morning with a fierce, stabbing stomach ache, nausea, diarhea, and total loss of appetite. I skipped the gym and work. The doctors switched me to another antibiotic, but I still felt lousy, really lousy, until I went to bed Saturday night. Basically, two completely shot days. I don't ever want to see that sh*t again in my life!
I've had some pretty strong anti biotics before but that sounds really bad.
I still think I'd be willing to go through that and more if I had Anthrax exposure. Probably feels like your going to die though doesn't it?

No, I think that would be more like food poisoning. Cipro was no fun, though. I'm sure it beats the hell out of actually getting Anthrax. A cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon who treated my finger yesterday told me it's really being over prescribed.

The real scary thing about the over perscription of these high powered super antibiotics is the ability of these germs to mutate and adapt to become super bugs. Just breeding a whole new "anthrax".

There are other drugs that can be used to treat anthrax, but I guess the names aren't as catchy! One such drug is doxycycline, which my handy dandy medical guide says is primarily used for venereal infections... try explaining THAT to your spouse!
BTW, Raptor, I had the same symptoms when I had an allergic reaction to erythrimycin (sp?). Seriously nasty, nasty feeling... I can only remember one other time that I very seriously wanted to just DIE right then rather than deal with that pain. I'm glad you're feeling better!

What Sondra said is true, everything she said actually
I think considering this strain thats being posted is killed by nearly anything even Pencillin. I think I'd want to try that first.
