I have a good friend who's red-green color blind. One day he was driving through downtown Fullerton, CA when he panicked, pulled over to the curb, and stopped. I'm not color-blind, but the sun was hitting my eyes at a funny angle and I couldn't see clearly with some horizontal lights coming up. I didn't know what to do either so I just slammed on the breaks, the guy started honking behind me so I assumed it was green.
I was right. Thank God.

I had heard that there was one traffic signal in New York City that had the green light on the top and the red on the bottom because some Irish group complained that having the green light on the bottom was insulting to the Irish.
Imagine a color blind driver coming up to that intersection!
