I've tried using waze in my area I dont really feel confident with it though but if you can't have a radar detector it will have to do.
On the freeway the most important thing to look out for is traffic patterns if you see brake lights in the distance you know there's a cop. Everyone breaks for cops even if they're not speeding.

Not sure where your friend lives, but isn't 4 mph over the limit a warning?
You can get a ticket for just 1 mile over.
I don't know what to tell you. That is absolutely ridiculous. Sorry for your friend, I guess. Where I live (Miami) people generally live about 5 mph above the speed limit.

sorry to jump so far back in convo, but there's a video of a texas state trooper who pulled over an "out of state plate" car and separated the 2 guys to get each one's story on where they were going, etc., and when he finally told them why they got pulled over in the first place, the trooper said they were clocked going 2 over and he wanted to see "if everything was ok". yeah, total bs. but it does happen and 1 over is reason for them to legally pull you over. or else they just make up a bs reason.
Lol, I received a ticket a few months after I bought my s for going 33 in a 30! I had just exited out of a friends apartment complex and was driving along the side street toward the highway which was curved when she lit me up. She was breathing heavy and freaking out and said she thought I was going to flip my car! She was a rookie and eventually another cop came and discussed it with her. It was also one of the more affluent suburbs, although im not sure that matters.
JOC, is the CHP using some new frequency that the Valentine One is "blind to?" Just came from Santa Cruz to LA and saw a CHP point a radar gun directly at traffic in my direction & the Valentine registered no signal.
Thanks!

It was probably a lidar gun rather than radar. Lasers have little to no dispersal when used correctly, so there's no superfluous radiation for the detectors to pick up on.
Don't be "That Guy."
That Guy who's out in the left lane when the radar detector goes off or That Guy who's the only car on the road at 0100 and running fast. I read the local newspaper "police blotter" section and things like no license plate light on the rear, speed, and no front license plate are just an excuse to get pulled over. Lots of arrests made this way for non-traffic offenses. That's what they're very often looking for, not 5mph over the limit. Yep, my S2000 has a front plate.
I ran Columbus to Cleveland on I71 yesterday afternoon. At least 8 OSP cars had guys pulled over but traffic seemed to run 80mph (limit is 70mph) all the way. The guys stopped were probably That Guy. I was running my big car (and big target) Expedition, not the S2000. I avoid the left lane mostly and let the Summit and Franklin County licensed cars run the left where they back up traffic and have no clue what a polite flash of the headlights means.

Thanks! Guess no Laser detector available?

A lot of radar detectors advertise laser detection as well.
My point was that lidar guns use a literal laser beam to measure speed, whereas radar emits a wave. The radar waves bounce around and reflect off of things pretty easily, which is how radar detectors alert you, they pick up on those superfluous waves. With a laser, there's no waves for the detector to pick up on, because a beam travels in a straight line and then terminates shortly after it makes contact with an object (for the most part). 9 times out of 10, if you did happen to get a real laser alert, the officer already has your speed.
