Could Not Believe My Eyes
Saw two, yes two, Jaguar XJ220's yesterday in Scottsdale. They must be here for this week's Barrett Jackson Auto Show and Auction. Never seen one before. Look similar to a Modena. Very very beautiful car. Anybody know anything about these cars? How much do they sell for? This should be a great year for the Auction. Anyone coming to Scottsdale this week?

It is a fast car for sure, with a racing-derived twin turbo six cylinder engine, 212 mph top speed achieved at Fort Stockton TX. The car was not U.S. legal until very recently when some government loophole opened up and now they can be imported and driven on U.S. roads (see AutoWeek issue from a few weeks ago). Only a few hundred were built.
The XJ220 was supposed to come with a V12 and all wheel drive, at least that is what Jaguar told its buyers initially who had plunked down thousands of dollars to reserve one. When Jaguar announced that the production car would have a V6 and rear drive instead of a V12 and AWD as promised in addition to a higher price tag, many of the buyers became very angry and sued Jaguar. I can't remember all the details, but it was a nasty situation and thus Jaguar didn't build very many cars. Also, there were a few quality problems

Jaguar=quality
not likely
They did have a hard time selling them when new.
There was even a made for TV racing series which had
guys like Rutherford,Jones, and others racing them.
They got real smacked up.

That's right the car cost a quarter of a million. It is not your run of the mill cars like 911 turbos or Modenas(if you can call them normal) It belongs in the supercar leaque with F50s, F40s, Mclauren, 959s and etc.
I remember the XJ220 racing series as well. And I remember the tears from my eyes when they got smacked up. Their performance, because it was _all_ XJ220's and nothing else, didn't seem that surprising. If some other cars were thrown out there, I'm sure the performance of the XJ220 would be phenomenal.
Regarding legal troubles with Jag, gee...that reminds me, what ever happened to Vector? I remember when they first asked for investors (min. of $2k) back in 89 or 90 in DuPont mag.
Also, yes, the Jag's are not reliable. When Ford took over them, 88 and 89, they were crap crap crap. Electrical problems from hell. 1987 was the last year I consider to be a real Jag - even though I wouldn't complain if there was an XK8 Coupe in my possession.
I've heard from a lot of Jag owners - they say up to about 60K miles, they are always in the shop, after that, they are a pain in the butt to maintain. Then again, by 60K miles, you've already replaced most of the car!
