Default Damn POPUPS!

Ok. I think I have a program installed on my computer that regularly opens an internet explorer window for an advertisement. (about once an hour) Is there something I can download to get rid of this? It's driving me nuts!

Agree.. look for AdAware program, free and effective. You may also want to switch browsers, Mozilla's Firefox is a good one. No popups

You need to first remove the currently installed spyware/malware using something like Adaware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, PestPatrol, etc. Mozilla won't help with that since the program is already installed, and you can't completely remove IE.

Once you've gotten rid of the current problem, then using FireFox might help reduce future problems.

SP2 if you have XP
adaware
SpyBot
etc.

Stop clicking on "Yes" will go along way to stopping this kind of problem. Set IE on High security, as recommended. Don't trust $$$$$$ or hacking/cracking/warez sites. If you need to install something from a pop-up window to get you stolen 0-day game, don't. Stop using IM clients like Yahoo - use Trillian instead - third party software is less likely to have the exact same vulnerabilities as the Yahoo, MSN, and AOL clients. Sometimes this means soome features, like binary transfer, don't work very well, but hey, use ftp or email if you need to send a pic or big file.

Yes, Apple computers don't have any of this nasty spyware that plagues Windows, but as far as your current problems:

- Downlod Spybot S&D
- Run it
- Immunize the computer using Spybot too
- Download Firefox
- Never use Internet Explorer again
- Go to Control Panel->Internet Options->Advanced tab
- Uncheck the following:
- Enable Install On Demand (both tabs)
- All the multimedia tabs

I think there's some more, but this will pretty much shut down IE, and as long as you use Firefox as your browser in the future, and run spybot a few times, including a few before Windows loads, you should be okay.

Oh, and if you don't have SP2 yet, get it. Then get SP3 and the rest of the fixes to that seem to pop up on a daily basis to MS's years-old OS.

Adware and Spydoctor finds more than spybot.

Mozilla dosent work with a few java programs and others, you could also try Netcaptor as a browser, it has a blocker. Or you could use google pop up blocker on IE.
