I refer you to the ONLY source you can really trust, CECIL ADAMS' STRAIGHT DOPE:

Years ago I remember reading about a debate--I believe it was in the Senate--about whether or not to go to daylight savings time year-round. One Senator pointed out that nothing comes for free, and that the cost of this extra hour of daylight would be paid, in part, by the people whose draperies wear out more quickly because of the extra exposure to damaging sunlight. Evidently he was serious.

A little over two hundred years ago, a bald man wearing wire frame glasses and known to fly kites during electrical stroms thought of it first ! Ben said it would save candle power! Imagine that. It was kicked around again during WWI and a again during WWII. During the energy crisis of the 70s, the U.S. congress got serious about it and passed a law. And we'll celibrate its passing in a couple of hours.

I don't really like daylight savings time either. The only advantage I can see is that at least in the fall, you get an extra hour to party.

I wonder how much productivity is lost from the adjustment period. It's like your jet lagged for a couple of weeks every time it changes.
