Death row inmate wants to donate liver
from the link:
"In a Florida case, an inmate was denied a request to donate a kidney to his brother. The condemned man was later exonerated and released from jail, but his brother died waiting for a transplant, Dieter said."
I think he should most definently be allowed to donate liver, but dont understand why he would have to have a stay for 2 months....if he is going to be killed why does he need to fully recover?

I think it is fine for a death row inmate to donate. Great.
I do have two problems with it though.......
First, death bed conversions are horsecrap, this guy can't buy favor with his maker. (and I am Catholic, we invented death bed repentance)
Second, I have a feeling that when faced with death, rational humans will do anything to preserve their own life. I am paraphrasing a line from the Dawn of the Dead remake when Max Headroom is bitten and about to die and Ving is waiting to shoot him when he turns to a zombie. He says something as he is dying like "Its funny how when you come to the end that each breath becomes so precious" I think the guy has a trick up his sleeve.
Methinks he will have the operation and then have his lawyer argue in front of a judge that he can't be executed until he is fully recovered from surgery because to kill a sick person would be cruel and unusual punishment. I would be more comfortable if they removed the liver and then went with a fatal dose of morphine while he is still on the table. Kill two birds with one stone. (pun intended) Wow, how cold does that sound?

I think he should be able to donate, as I think most people do. I think while he's at it he should donate all of his viable organs, at least make his end worth something. I also think you should be in reasonably good health the day of your execution. Give the man his mind before you take his life. Maybe then he'll make his peace. If he's sick then h has a greater chance for loosing whatever clariety he might gain from the experience.
I take your point, but if he donate just to prolong his own life he is still just living for himself. Without getting too philisophical, self interest is the root of all evil. Greed is self interest. Killing someone is self interest because you put your own motive over their right to exist. Rape is the rapists self interest in domination or pleasure over the victims dignity. It extends to any act. Giving ones organs to just put off deserved punishment is not slefless, it is once again self interest.
If he had come to terms with what he had done and said "I am ready to accept the punishment for my actions, but I want to do good as my final act so as you put me down (like the dog that I am) you may use my organs to save another life." I am cool with that.
If he is saying "Hey, I can scam a few more months out of this deal!!!! Maybe by them we will have another strategy to prolong it further!!!!" it show he has not come to terms with whatever his crime was. It also prolongs the discomfort for the victims family. They will not have closure for months longer.

"closure" is another term for
They will never have closure anyway. Most victoms and their families suprisingly
find themselves feeling even worse right after a conviction or even an execution. Why? Because now they are reliving the experience over again.
Actually I wouldn't care if he had donated avery organ of his boday one by one until he had nothing left to donate even if he was doing it to just save his own skin. Oh the state better not be paying for it though, but even if they are I guess I'd still like to see it.

I don't know, if someone killed say....my dog, and they were gonna get the chair, I would be frothing at the mouth waiting for the pull of the switch. I think the longer the guy lived the more I would be peeved.
I have toured many prisons. You can not imagine what classic "anti-social" behavior people are capable of. Like that guy who was mad ad his 8 year old daughter so he stabbed the girl and her friend to death. Anti-social whackos have a screw loose that can not be fixed. (that we know how to fix now anyway) They will NEVER be able to function in society, their brain is wired wrong. I feel slightly sorry for them, but not enough to waste a pefectly good cell and 30 years worth of meal on. That could be used to house and feed a lesser degenerate that would otherwise be on the street. Prison space is finite, the number of total weirdos seems to be infinite.
ANyway, getting to far off topic.......Ok for prisoner to donate, in fact I would encourage it, as long as it does not delay the "execution" of their sentence.
Just for the record, I ain't against frying the bastards. I just don't think "closure" is real. I'd rather see a line up of next to kin or persons with interest that would be the ones pulling the switch rather than some gaurd. Father doesn't want to do it give it to the mother etc.. If noone wants to do it he lives his life in jail. Some victoms are saddened that the perp gets dead. I say they should make the call. Next of kin wins out in the debate.
Cost more to grill them then to keep them in jail. Lots of appeals, yet there a been a few good not just innocent men fried and that the only thing that freaks me out. I only want the death penalty when within 1% we know that guy is the one that did it. Video taped proof, DNA the whole shabang. Just because I wouldn't want to answer for making a mistake.

No offense, but this is just another example of Criminals trying to fight for their rights.
Since this story is local, it's been all over the news around here....
I'm not for the death penalty personally, but I'm more for taking away criminal rights than giving them more.
His sister may be a victim, but from what physicians have said on the news, getting a new liver isn't as difficult as other organs.

Live donation of a portion of the liver for transplantation is more difficult than complete one due to the fact that there are many more steps involved. There are very few hospitals doing this at this time. My son offered to be a live donor for me but we didn't have to do that. The UofM Hospital has not done one yet, at the time of my transplant, last year Apr 30, the Uof Colorado had done 1 or 2, maybe more but not certain of that.
