Debt collection question
My mother used to own a corporation and closed in 1993 due to health reasons. There is a debt collector now requesting $3215.00 in back taxes and interest. She asked me to inquire about the debt cause she was concerned.
I called and they said she owes back taxes and he checked the state's records and found the corporation owes $1000 in 1991. Since the corporation is gone, does she still have to pay this? Unfortunately, since we've responded, they know where she lives and have my work telephone number. I know I'm shielded from their harassment by the Debt Collection Act, but they can still harass her.
If she has nothing (no assets, and no income except disability), what can they do to her? Can these liabilities be transferred to kin or spouse?
