Default Dental question

I've been putting of the dentist for a while now, but I have to go soon. I'll have to remove four wisdom teeth, fill 3-4 cavities, possible root canals... I hate needles, and wish to be knocked out before getting all this done. So can they put you under with just gas or do they have to poke you as well?

A lot of oral surgeons are using an oral sedative now. You basically swallow a pill and it knocks you out.

I got the needle in me when I got my wisdom teeth removed, it wasn't bad from what I remembered, I was passed out. I'm also getting two Cavities and two filings redone , broken up into two one hour sessions, involving some sort of needle to numb me... not looking forward to that.

see I'm hoping they can knock me out without IV. I hate needles. Give me some gas or a pill please!

i had 6 fillings on the left side of my mouth from cavities at one time... it hurt. alot. i was awake the whole time and the numbness was wearing off half way through it. funny thing is, i had 0 on the right side of my mouth.

That's actually quite common because most people chew predominantly on one side of their mouth, so one side gets all the action and side effects that come with it.

I heard that some dentists recommend being awake for wisdom teeth removal or root canals, and actually refuse to knock someone out for it. I have no idea why, and it's just something i've heard.

They actually had to knock me out for my wisdom teeth. I was gassed and high as hell messing with all the instruments so they strapped me down. Well, somehow I got untied and they held me down and IV'd me. Didn't hurt at all and I don't remember a thing after that!

i was awake while getting my 4 wisdom teeth removed...on nitrous baby! they gave me a local anesthesia to numb my mouth, and the nitrous to make me not give a damn what else they did. the surgeon wanted me awake though, so i could respond if he needed me to do something. pretty funny experience...apparently i get talkative when i'm high, and they couldn't get me to stop talking...or trying to talk. since i had no feeling in any part of my mouth, i just kept saying things like oo oo eee e in uh or er? or ill i ink uff in a ee ee?

i can't say i understand people's needle apprehension. you can barely even feel anything, what's the big deal?

also...it sounds like some of you people need to start brushing your teeth more than twice a week...lol
