the current (or soon to be) upgrade for the D70 is the D70s. Nothing really new with it though, just a 2.0" vs 1.8" LCD. It has the same picture quality as the D70 and all updates in the D70s will be made available to D70 users via firmware updates. They (Nikon) say to expect the firmware update around mid May.

one more thing. the D50 uses SD cards while the D70 and all other Nikon DSLR's use CF. One thing to consider.
