Does anyone know what the difference is between a suit and a sportcoat?

Suit coats come with slacks.

Basically, that's it, but sports coats can have brass buttons or other material not typical to a suit coat. Also there are some materials not found in suits, like cashmere, camel hair, silk, etc...

um yeah. A "suit" is more than just a jacket. A sportcoat is just that, literally.

actually a suit coat with brass buttons is commonly known as a blazer.

Blazer is a sport coat, usually has a notched collar and patch pocket. A jacket of a suit can be worn as a sportcoat.
