DIY: how to paint a wall
1. Before you begin, use a damp cloth, vacuum hose or duster to remove dust and cobwebs from the corners of the walls you are going to paint. These can create unevenness in the paint and are difficult to remove once the paint is dried.
2. Make sure the room is well ventilated!
3. Place the drop cloth by the wall you are going to paint first.
4. Start by using the sandpaper to smooth out any lumps, bumps, and uneven spots on the wall. This is important because these spots will be visible once you paint.
5. Look for holes (caused by pushpins or nails) and use spackle to fill them in. Sand the spackle after it is dried to make it even with the rest of the wall. Wipe it down with a damp rag.
6. Cover the trim around windows, doors, and the floor with painter's tape. Make sure the trim is completely covered and the tape is not touching the wall.
7. Apply primer using the roller. Let the primer dry completely before you paint. If you are painting over a dark color, you might need to apply more than one coat of primer.
8. Using a paint brush, paint the edges of the room to create a border you can then fill in.
9. Using a roller, start painting the wall in an up and down motion. You can paint a "W" and then fill it in to make sure you didn't miss any spots. Make sure you don't have too much paint on the roller because it will cause the paint to drip or streak.
10. After you have finished painting the wall, wait for it to dry. This can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.
11. Paint the wall a second time with a thin layer of paint to make sure it's even. Be careful not to put too much paint on the roller because it will make the paint look too thick.
12. After the second coat is dry, take off the painter's tape and fill in any spots you missed with a small paint brush.
13. Move on to the next wall and repeat until the entire room is painted.
