Do you have a DOG....
A secondary(followup) visit to a vet school/lab after initial diagnosis, discovered ingestion of mycotoxins had been a component in the failure of Raj's liver. (Also, his billy rubin levels confirmed his liver failure). Since we only fed him SD throughout his life, i wouldn't think it was a stretch to say a few bad bags of SD introduced him to these toxins that began the domino effect.
Note: We did mix up a little bit of Lamb Broth, Lamb bone marrow (he LOVED it), and raw fruits/veggies to keep things from getting boring.
He was my first pup, I tried to be as educated a pet owner as possible, trusting my well respected vet's recommendations. He always said to stick with one food brand and avoid changing brands as that could upset the digestive process and lead to diarrhea/vomiting.
You know, the bad thing about dogs is they don't let you know their in pain until it is unbearable... by the time we noticed any visible signs, the sarcoma had already reached the final stage.

Hmm, I do remember multiple vets telling me SD was good stuff, oh, 16 years ago. I partly raised a black lab puppy on it but I had to switch away from it because his poop stank so bad! I mean really nauseating and definitely due to SD's puppy formula. That dog only lived to eight and, come to think of it, I had to put him down because of liver problems. The vet never suggested any cause.

I've also heard that the chlorinated water in SoCal is causing skin rashes on some of the smaller dogs...
I make my dogs food from raw turkey (lower anti biotics and steroids than most all other meats), pumpkin (or some other carb) and usually a mix of fresh vegitables. My male dog had mast cell cancer with tumors poping up every few months but since I changed from Iams to the raw food over a year ago, the tumors have stopped. Their breath now smells much better and their coats are nice and shiney. I think even the high end processed food you buy in the store is no good in the long run.
As far as NYC, it has the incredible aquaduct system and most of the tap water I've drank in NJ has been good.

I agree with BrendenCO and the raw food type diets.
My dog gets fed mostly raw chicken necks or backs (available from my local chinese butcher, or the local chicken suppliers). We also make up vegies and rice and other things too. He loves an apple in the morning. This works out even cheaper than buying commercial dog food.
About once a week he also gets some commercial dry dog food.
The tinned dog food smells bad when you open the can, and even worse when it comes out the other end of the dog.
