Generally 15% - 20%, same as waiters.

I tip 30% and I get much better haircuts as a result. Of course, this is at a nice shop where you make appointments ahead of time. At Supercuts (or a local $10 place) I tip 15-20%, depending on the attention to detail and attitude of the stylist.

the amount you tip should reflect how much you appreciate the haircut itself as well as the haircut experience. also, how much you tip will also depend on if the hairdresser cutting your hair is just some random person or if he/she is someone you have cut your hair on a regular basis. for the random hairdresser, anything from $0-$5 is adequate. if he/she is your regular hairdresser, then i feel $5+ is appropriate. i, personally, have had the same lady cut my hair for the past few years, and i generally tip from $7-$10. i know she appreciates this because she takes extra time to cut my hair and pay immaculate attention to the details compared to other customers that sit in her chair.
