Default Does Morality Need Religion?

Hey guys, gotta brain question for you,

In my ethics/philosophy class, me and a friend are arguing this very question of does morality need religion, and I was curious on your guys' (and girls') takes on the subject.

We have a very diverse community here, and I'm fascinated to know what you guys think?

Thanks
Chad

Does morality need religion?

Absolutely not.

What about all of the immoral acts committed in the name of "religion"

Yeah, but the people who commit those immoral acts, do they believe they are acting immoral?

And is our morality the right morality?

(Not saying I agree, just playing Devil's Advocate)

Chadwick - you're making my head hurt.

Who knows what other people may believe is moral or immoral?

Gotta define "our" morality for an answer to your question...

You see, that's where we run into the problem with our presentation. We're arguing that you don't need to religion to have morals, but in the very classroom there's different moral levels and beliefs, it's frustrating.

I commit immoral acts all the time. Yes I know they are immoral. An immoral act is not necessarly evil though.. There is a difference between good vs evil and moral vs immoral.

No, I am not religious.

I am a chaotic neutral person.

However, most of our morals are based on certain aspects of certain religions.

How do the ones who believe that morality requires religion explain the immoral acts of so many "religious" people?

While many of our morals are indeed based on religious beliefs - that doesn't preclude anyone from being both moral and non-religious.
