Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?
He's the Russian behavioral psychologist who studied conditioned response. By ringing a bell just before feeding a dog he got the dog to associate the sound of the bell with eating. Pavlov demonstrated that after suitable conditioning the dog would begin to salivate when it heard the bell.
