If a teen lifts, will his growth be affected? I think it's a fallacy.

i dont know but some people who are pretty strongly built at my school are short while their parents are tall, most of those did lift like around 7th-8th grade, but it may just be them, probably just is..

The answer in no. This has been studied, and what was found that lifting weights a early as 10 years old builds stronger, thicker bones which allow more surface for muscle to attach.

Check out http://www.drmirkin.com/ (he's a real MD) he has articals and sourced material on stuff like this

weight-lifting does stunt your growth. your body secretes its own growth hormone to build up muscles. if too much is running through the body, it closes the epiphyseal plate (the ends of bones needed for vertical growth). when these close prematurely, your growth is stunted. also, stay was from testosterone (steroids), since your body sees them in your system, the body says to itself, "hey, i don't have to make anymore." so since your testes make the majority of testosterone, they shut down leaving you infertile. the interesting things you learn in school.

My parents have bitched to me about this subject numerous times. I'm short (5'5") and have a pretty decent build. Thing is: I'm TALLER then BOTH of them!! Genetics play a pretty important part in growth I believe. I didn't start lifting until I was 18.
