Default Does your house creak & pop

My house has a habit of making loud popping noises every once in a while. Usually it happens just as I'm dozing off, and it comes from the area in my ceiling over my master bedroom. Sometimes it's very loud, almost like a cap gun, which is really annoying when I'm trying to sleep.

I'm just wondering, do other people's houses also make these loud popping noises? When I first moved into the house, I just assumed it was due to the fact that it was a new house and things were settling and shifting, but I've been there 3.5 years now, and it still does it.

the temp changes and things contract. most homes dont have humidifiers so the air is drier.

when materials in your house are under a constant load, the will slowly move or deform. it's called "creep" and it's normal

It'll probably settle eventually, but it takes many years for most homes to stop shifting - though some never do if built incorrectly.

That's what I'm worried about. I don't recall my parents' house being this "talkative" when I lived there as a kid... but I suspect that's because my dad built it himself and may have done a better job than the random day laborers that threw my house together. Of course, my parents' house is a geodesic dome, so maybe it doesn't have the same type of loads on its joints as my typical "square" house has.
