Don't Sweat The Small Stuff
Almost two weeks ago our daughter totaled our '99 Voyager; she'd had her driver's license for about three weeks. She got a couple of scrapes and bruises, but is fine otherwise.
We were concerned about what the insurance company would give us as a settlement, and have been busy trying to find a replacement once we get the money. My wife had determined that the wholesale Blue Book value of the van was in the $4,500 - $5,500 range.
This morning she left me a voicemail that she had good news, then another later that she had other news that she didn't want to leave on a voicemail.
The good news was that the insurance company has offered us $10,000 for the van.
The other news was that a family we know from church was on vacation, something (we're not sure what) happened, the father was killed, and one of the sons is in surgery; the mom and the two other boys are apparently fine.
All of a sudden the insurance settlement on the van doesn't seem all that important.
So if an insurance company is less than generous in a settlement, if someone spits on your car, if you get a speeding ticket when the green Mustang was going faster than you were, don't sweat it.
Every morning my wife and I pray together before we start our day. The praises and requests vary from day to day, but we always include a request that everyone in the family return home safely that night.
The rest can be replaced. Please don't sweat the small stuff.

An update on the accident: we now know what happened. They were trying to get from Anaheim, CA to Seattle, WA for a family get-together, the mother was driving at night near Chico, CA, and she fell asleep. The car rolled, her husband was killed almost immediately, and her son was thrown out; we don't know if he were wearing his seatbelt, but we suspect not.
He died Saturday morning.
Please don't drive when you're tired. And please make sure everyone in the car (yourself included) is wearing their seatbelt.
